Tip: Changing sounds without interruption.
The way this is accomplished on Motif is to play from “MIX” mode, changing the voice/performance with the 1-16 buttons when the [Track Select] button engaged and lit. There is a totally programmable “Mix” for each song and each pattern. That adds up to a total of 128 unique 16-voice arrangements with effects for endless combinations of voices, performances, arpeggios etc.
Using the Performance copy function that Allen describes in his tips section, it is possible to put up to 4 (or more) performances that can be selected without a break or interruption in the sound even allowing one sound (voice and or performance) to sustain under the most recently selected sound (voice or performance). Using the sustain pedal, it is possible to sustain a sound on one channel (part, or parts in the case of a performance) while playing on another channel.
Now try this.
In [Utility] mode [F4] CTLASN [SF3] FT SW and set the foot switch to CC # 66 [Sostenut]. Plug a foot switch into the assignable jack. Select a sustaining pad type sound in the mix, play any note or chord and press the (assignable) foot switch. Change the channel/part/track and play the newly selected sound. The original sound is “latched” and will play until you go back to that channel and press and release the (assignable) foot switch again to “unlatch” the sound. This is a different behavior than the sustain pedal. Why not use both!?!?!
If you wonder why voices and performances can’t do this, it is because of the effects. Each voice and performance is programmed with unique settings for both the system and insert effects. When a voice or performance is changed the effects must reset completely. This is usually an unpleasant sound and Yamaha chose for the sound to mute upon reset.
When programming a mix for layered/split/sustained playing, there is a wealth of parameters for creating virtually any imaginable situation. The performance copy job will allow any voices insert effect to be “brought in” to any mix. And in a mix there is the additional “variation” effect that can be used to make up for other voices that need some insert type effects. |
