IF YOUR THUMBS ARE HURTING YOU AFTER PLAYING YOUR EWI YOU ARE IN SERIOUS DANGER OF INJURING YOURSELF !! Tendonitis in your thumbs can/will linger for years and it HURTS !!! BAD !
When I first got my 4000s I loved it so much I didn't stop playing it. I played for hours at a stretch, and after short breaks, I'd go play some more. For hours. Every day for a couple of months. I mean, every day. I loved it.
One day I woke up and my left thumb hurt. Not all that unusual. Sort of felt like I slept on it maybe? I'm a very active vigorous athletic guy so I'm used to body aches and pains. Athletes play with and through pain.
If you are playing an EWI 4000s --- you are a musician.
There is NO GOOD REASON for you to be in physical pain because you are playing an EWI!
Back to my story. Me being me, as I said, I kept on playing. Noticing it was bothering me, I tried various things to alleviate the pain but because I hadn't realised it was the playing that was the actual cause of my thumb pain I kept at it. And naturally it got worse and then it became BOTH thumbs. I remember the moment it dawned on me that it was the weight of the ewi and me grasping it, holding it out away from me while playing that was the cause of my pains.
It was much too much TOO LATE !!
I stopped playing, but my pain slowly but surely turned into something akin to anguish --- non stop.
This is after owning the EWI 2 months, mid - November 07 to February 08 maybe, and playing pretty much non-stop daily. OK? I don't know how much time it takes to stress the tendons but I sure can tell you how long it takes before it stops hurting all day and night long. As I sit here and type this, they ache (but mostly in memory). (mostly). It was actually about 6 months before they (my thumbs tendons)calmed down from serious aching and there is no treatment for it (that I am aware of), other than to stop, cease, halt, doing what you are doing to cause it.
If someone knows of a treatment, PLEASE?!?!? post it?!
LOL
What I have done since regaining use of my thumbs and playing again is to pay attention to my hands and if they start to hurt to stop immediately. To keep that from happening, I lean forward abit when I play -- I have adjusted the strap that came with the EWI so that when it hangs in front of me, in playing postion, the white tip is by my chin so that tilting my head forward slightly the tip is there for my lips. I let the ewi hang from the strap with out holding it with my hands then grasp it lightly with both hands fingertips and thumbs so that it comes to the front of my torso against my right hand, with the front of thumb lightly touching the ground plate and the back of my thumb resting comfy like on the right side of my tummy. This way, the ewi is on a slight angle to the left and instead of holding it up with my thumbs, I have freed my left thumb to play on the now more vertical BACK of the ewi, (as opposed to the BOTTOM of it, which is what you have if you lift the ewi while you play). Since I play the ewi in trumpet fingering, my left hand always has ring and middle fingers in contact in front with the thumb in back for the rollers and the right side of my left index finger pushes the ewi very slightly to the right to be in playing position and I have discovered that the thumb on the rollers works better for me if I play with a lighter touch and conciously remind my self to loosen up my grip on the thing. I get fewer mis-touches which cause blurps and bleeps. Also, I noticed that I have a tendency to press harder (clutching) when I'm trying to play seldom used scales fingerings or anything that causes me to think (stress?) while I am playing. Maybe that's where the advice to "hang loose" comes in?
I looked at the thingys that hold it up from your chair or the floor but I am not convinced it is necessary unless you are physically unable to do it my way. I really don't want use a crutch lift. Probably only because it adds another piece to the set-up and if there is a way to lose any piece or forget to bring it -- I will. Once again, I think it is a very bad idea to lift the EWI 4000s with your thumbs to play it. It seems to me the holder is lifting the ewi more horizontal than vertical also but maybe with the weight supported by the apparatus it will be less likely to harm your thumbs. If you go that route please post your results?
I also looked at the guitar style strap and that looks interesting plus it has a locking swivel clasp which will make it much harder for me to drop my precious EWI. I think I will get that one and see how it works out.
I would have posted something prior to this about what happened to me, but I didn't think it happened to any one else. I never saw any other posts about this, so I thought maybe it was just ME -- that I was doing something wrong and normal people didn't. I have seen many videos of guys playing the EWI holding it out in front of themselves. Stronger thumbs than I possess, I guess.
