1. How should a keyboarder improve their skills and their elementary abilities? We are so impressed by your speed, stability and articulation and not so many keyboarders can make it. A lot of people believe one would have to practice lots of classical pieces like Mozart, Czerny, Chopin for years. So what's your opinion? Can you recommend some learning materials?
I think that it is important to have a basic classical base. one should practice Hannon, learn Bach Inventions and other composers because of the rigidity of that style, it forces you to elevate your technique to a certain level. After that,I think it is important to find things that you enjoy playing and focus on that.
2. About the lead solo. Solo seems to be very mysterious for rookie keyboarders. They seem to be totally random and irregular. Are all these solos strictly arranged and practiced before playing? Or you just improvise them every time under a basic chord structure? Can you give us some suggestion when arranging and playing them.
My solos are mostly inprovised. Many times when I am soloing on someone elses music, I only find out what key it is in, then I tell my engineer to hit record and I just play. Most of the time it works out great! I never work out my solos.
3. What role do you think a keyboarder should play in a metal band? In China (I believe in most countries), keyboard seems to be less of importance, the band is "always full of guitar sounds". Keyboarders would somehow always play Pad or Sound FX. What's your opinion about this? (of course, there are exceptions like Dream Theater )
It depends on what the band is, and what you want to do as a keyboardist. As long as it rocks, put the keyboards out front.
4. Preset Lead or Pad sounds will not work all the time. Can you share some of your sound tweaking experience? I know this would be a very huge and complex question, some tips or directions will be just fine~
You have to take a step back and use your imagination,,, think about what sounds and parts you would want to hear from the keyboardist and become that guy. Just use your ears and be tasteful.
5. More and more boards are integrating arpeggio functions (like Arps for Motif, Karma for M3, Oasys). Do you think it is a "good" thing for keyboarder? In which way you will make use of them? (for me personally, I can only consider of using midi gates)
I rarely use those features. i think that I have used an arpeggiator once or twice on a record.
6. Many people believe that hard or traditional synthesizer will be one day replaced by the computer-based synth software. What's your opinion about this? And which boards have been your favorites during your career.
I use bot hard and soft synths in the studio, but live I use only hard synths. Everything is always changing in the synth world, it will be interesting to see where everthing goes.
7. For the rookie keyboarders, which boards will you recommend considering the price, sound quality and user-friendly UI?
I like KORG, Roland, and NORD
8. Can you briefly introduce your way of composing? Will you write the score before you actually play or you will just improvise and record them?
I never write a score, I usually record my song ideas right to ProTools, then start developing as I go.
9. Which genres of music do you usually listen to besides progressive metal? Can you recommend your favorite bands, songs, as well as your own favorite music for us?
In my car, I only listen to Hip Hop....Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Notorious BIG.
10. (This's kind of my personal question ) Will there be any possibility that one day, we see a live performance with all members of Dream Theater in China?
Who knows do yoU mean the current band, or former members? |
